The creators of Bastaion and Transistor have announced the release date for their next game. Supergaint’s Pyre will launch on July 15th 2017 for PS4 and PC. Pyre is already available for pre-order on the PlayStation Store and Steam. A Xbox One release is not currently planned.
Here’s how Supergaint Games describes the game,
“Pyre is a party-based RPG in which you lead a band of exiles to freedom through ancient competitions spread across a vast, mystical purgatory. Who shall return to glory, and who shall remain in exile to the end of their days? Find out during the course of the single-player campaign”
Unlike other RPGs, combat in the game takes the form of sports-like rituals called Rites. These are 3v3 battles where the goal is extinguish the enemy pyre. This is done by grabbing an orb placed in the middle of the field and using it to douse the enemy’s fire. Players will have to manage 3 characters however they can only control one at a time. Naturally each character has a unique personality and abilities that can affect battle. Other factors such as Talismans and Masteries allow further customization.
Yet another unique feature is that the game has no game over. Players can fail combat and lose however the story will continue. This was done so that players would not loose progress in-game or have the story stop because it doesn’t match what happened during gameplay. In turn successes and failures will lead to different endings.
Beyond the story campaign, there will be a local versus mode that pits two players against each other. There will be 20 different characters and each one’s abilities can be further customized. These characters will all come from the campaign however they will be available from the start if you don’t care about spoilers.
