As of January 2017, PlayStation 4 worldwide sales have reached 53.4 million. During the holiday season 6.2 million PS4 systems were sold.
In addition Sony sold 50.4 million games across digital platforms and retail. PlayStation exclusive Uncharted 4 reached more than 8.7 million copies sold. It is likely that the Uncharted 4 PS4 slim bundle contributed to these high numbers.
For comparison the highest selling console is the PlayStation 2 with an estimated 155 million sold. Although initially poor sales, the PlayStation 3 is estimated to have sold 83.3 million across its entire life cycle. As of now the PlayStation 4 may reach PlayStation 2 sales numbers, but momentum for the PS4 will need to be kept past the typical console life cycle or pick up before the launch of another console to reach the same numbers.
In regards to the PlayStation 4 sales, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House had this to say.
“We are truly grateful for the tremendous support from our fans and partners, which has helped to make this holiday season one of the best in our history. We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high quality gaming experience on PlayStation 4 Pro, while also expanding network services. We will remain steadfast in making the PS4 the best place to play.”
