PS4 Sales Reaches Over 50 Million

As of Jan­u­ary 2017, PlaySta­tion 4 world­wide sales have reached 53.4 mil­lion. Dur­ing the hol­i­day sea­son 6.2 mil­lion PS4 sys­tems were sold. 

In addi­tion Sony sold 50.4 mil­lion games across dig­i­tal plat­forms and retail. PlaySta­tion exclu­sive Unchart­ed 4 reached more than 8.7 mil­lion copies sold. It is like­ly that the Unchart­ed 4 PS4 slim bun­dle con­tributed to these high numbers. 

For com­par­i­son the high­est sell­ing con­sole is the PlaySta­tion 2 with an esti­mat­ed 155 mil­lion sold. Although ini­tial­ly poor sales, the PlaySta­tion 3 is esti­mat­ed to have sold 83.3 mil­lion across its entire life cycle. As of now the PlaySta­tion 4 may reach PlaySta­tion 2 sales num­bers, but momen­tum for the PS4 will need to be kept past the typ­i­cal con­sole life cycle or pick up before the launch of anoth­er con­sole to reach the same numbers. 

In regards to the PlaySta­tion 4 sales, Sony Inter­ac­tive Enter­tain­ment pres­i­dent Andrew House had this to say. 

“We are tru­ly grate­ful for the tremen­dous sup­port from our fans and part­ners, which has helped to make this hol­i­day sea­son one of the best in our his­to­ry. We will aim to con­tin­ue the momen­tum this year by broad­en­ing the PS4 title port­fo­lio, fur­ther enrich­ing the rev­o­lu­tion­ary gam­ing expe­ri­ences on PlaySta­tion VR and high qual­i­ty gam­ing expe­ri­ence on PlaySta­tion 4 Pro, while also expand­ing net­work ser­vices. We will remain stead­fast in mak­ing the PS4 the best place to play.”
