The publisher of the Mafia franchise has some good news for fans of the series who plan on buying the remake versions. If you already own Mafia II on Steam, you can get the upgrade for free. Mafia III’s free upgrade will be across all platforms (PS4, Xbox One and PC) and gives access to all the game’s DLC

Additionally, the game will automatically update to the Definitive Edition if you have the original installed on your console and you can claim the extra content in various digital stores as well.

The free upgrades were announced alongside the official details on Mafia: Definitive Edition within a 2K blog post: “Note that if you already own Mafia II on Steam, you will be automatically granted Mafia II: Definitive Edition at no additional cost. Furthermore, if you already own Mafia III on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Steam, you will be upgraded to Mafia III: Definitive Edition at no additional cost.”

The free upgrade for Mafia II is only available on PC via Steam, and unlocks three story expansions — Jimmy’s Vendetta, The Betrayal of Jimmy and Joe’s Adventure — along with four gear packs. The Mafia III’s Definitive Edition upgrade comes with three story missions as well — Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times — and two gear packs. Even if you buy a physical copy of Mafia III in the future, you can still grab the DLC for free.

Mafia: Definitive Edition isn’t yet available, but you can pre-order the game as a standalone or purchase it as part of the Mafia: Trilogy. This will give you access to Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition so you can play them before the Mafia: Definitive Edition is released on August 28th. Mafia II: Definitive Edition will also be available as a separate purchase for $30 on all platforms.
