In a very brief teaser from Nintendo, the company announced the newest addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. While there was plenty of speculation yesterday as to who the new character would be, turns out, it’s Steve from Minecraft. Of course, this caused a bit of ruckus on Twitter.
The reveal trailer showed Steve building walls, crafting items and summoning TNT blocks. He can jump on top of the blocks he places to get out of certain situations, and there are even switches that fling enemies or anvils to crush them. These building materials break quickly, so it won’t be persistent like Fortnite.
The presentation also showed a few skins for Minecraft Steve, including Alex, Enderman and Zombie. There was also a small glimpse at a Minecraft-themed stage, appearing to swap between different biomes.
Masahiro Sakurai made some comments on the addition, saying that bringing Steve to Smash Brothers would be a challenge. The hardest part being to get the block-building mechanic to work on all stages. More information on how Steve fights will likely be shown during the Minecraft Live event on October 3rd at 7:30 a.m PT/ 10:30 a.m. ET.
Steve is part of the Fighter’s Pass Vol.2 and is the second character to be released for this pass.
