Back in November, Sony filed a patent that implied they were planning on releasing replacement faceplates. The company registered documents for an “ornamental design for a cover for an electronic device,” with diagrams of the PS5 faceplates included for illustrative purposes.
Well, it’s now official. Sony has announced a new series of PS5 consoles covers, which will be priced at $55. They will come in color schemes Midnight Black, Starlight Blue, Galactic Purple, Nova Pink, and Cosmic Red. Sony says these “galaxy-inspired” colors will start to launch globally in January 2022 at participating retailers.
It’s super easy to apply these plates. Just pop off the existing white plates and snap on the the color of your choice, and you’re good.
In addition to these new colored faceplates, Sony is also releasing a new set of colored DualSense controllers. These share colors with the plates, so they will be available in Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple.
Previously, the only way to customize a PS5 was to paint it yourself or purchase a third-party options from companies like Dbrand, which offered “Darkplates” for $50. The company has attracted Sony’s legal team, catching a new legal threat from Sony’s lawyers, resulting in Dbrand shutting down all Darkplate production. They did, however, replace the Darkplates with Darkplate 2.0 shells.
If you’re looking to snag one of these official PS5 faceplates, Sony has preorders up right now on their website. However, Midnight Black and Cosmic Red are only available at this point.
