Sony had previously announced that the standard and special editions of Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 would not be getting a free PS5 upgrade. The company has decided to reverse this decision.
Before this reversal, those who purchased the Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalia editions of the game on PS4 would be eligible for a PS5 upgrade. Now anyone who purchases Forbidden West on the PS4, no matter the edition, can upgrade free of charge.
“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West,” stated Sony president Jim Ryan. “While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”
Ryan also made it clear that going forward, any Sony-published first-party exclusive cross-gen titles will have a $10 digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This includes upcoming titles, like God of War and Gran Turismo 7.
This applies to both digital and physical copies. If you have a PS4 version of the game on disc, you’ll need a disc version of a PS5 in order to upgrade that game.
Horizon Forbidden West launches on February 18th, 2022 for PS4 and PS5. If you’re looking to grab a copy before release, you can check out our preorder guide.
