Sega unveiled its next Sonic game at The Game Awards this year, and it’s an open-world title called Sonic Frontiers. There was a trailer that was shown for the new action adventure, which included a teased release window of 2022.
Sega is calling this title “open-zone-inspired,” bringing Sonic’s iconic zones together with open-world mechanics. Sonic Frontiers takes place in Starfall Islands, a brand-new setting that includes forests, waterfalls, and deserts. The trailer gave an overview of the environments of Starfall Island, as well as teasing a massive boss fight.
Frontiers is being developed by Sonic Team Japan, and is led by Morio Kishimoto, who also directed Sonic Colors, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Forces.

“Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike,” Sonic Team USA creative officer Takashi Iizuka said in the announcement. “With the effort of the talented developers at Sonic Team Japan, we’ve created an all-new style of gameplay experience for Sonic the Hedgehog, where players will be able to explore lush and expansive landscapes with Sonic’s signature speed and abilities. There’s sure to be lots of twists and turns around every corner in Sonic Frontiers, and we’re excited to unveil more information about the game over the coming months.”
Sonic will be having a great year in 2022, as he’ll also be getting a sequel for the latest film that will be releasing on April 8th, 2022.
