The popular early access game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will come to consoles according to a recent interview with creative director Brendan Greene.
According to Greene the developer is already looking at a port to Xbox One. This does not mean a PS4 port won’t happen. Greene stated “We’re looking at both consoles of course, but we have no time frame for both”. Since the game was made using the Unreal 4 Engine, Greene says “ports to consoles isn’t that hard”. They also have the resources to “focus on getting the PC version done, but also look at how quickly [they] can bring it to other platforms”.
Currently the game is planned to exit early access within several months. It is likely that a console port won’t come until after this. An Xbox One port could potentially come earlier since Mircosoft allows for early access games. A PS4 version would have to come after the game is finalized since Sony generally doesn’t allow early access games.
Either way Bluehole Studios will likely want to port the game quickly to capitalize on its current momentum. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has grossed over $60 million with over 2 million copies sold. It also remains one the most played games on Steam and among the most watched games on Twitch. Launching console versions sooner rather than later would only further cement the game’s popularity and success.
