[Update] Microsoft Announces Xbox Game Pass A Videogame Subscription Service

Update: The article incorrectly stated that Xbox Game Pass would be on PC. This has now been corrected.

Microsoft has announced Xbox Game Pass. A subscription based service that gives people access to over 100 games on Xbox One. The subscription will be priced at $9.99 per month.

Unlike similar services, the games will not be streamed. Games can be downloaded directly to users’ console. Microsoft stated that this was done so people can play “without having to worry about streaming, bandwidth or connectivity issues”. The selection of games will change monthly, with new games being added and other games taken out.  In addition the service will give discounts on the games offered with Xbox Game Pass and related add-ons.

The service can be used without Xbox Live Gold however it will still be needed for multiplayer. There will not be a limit to the number of games that can be downloaded. Games downloaded from Xbox Game Pass can become inaccessible if the subscription isn’t renewed or a game is no longer apart of the catalog.

Testing for the program begins today. Only a select few from the Xbox Insider Program will be included in the alpha testing and only has a limited selection of games. The general public can use the service in spring, but those with Xbox Live Gold will have early access.

Exact release dates and all games included in the program have yet to be announced.
