New and exciting details about the future of Konami game development has surfaced. It appears the studio is focusing on premium game development, including a Castlevania “reimagining,” multiple new Silent Hill games, and a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3. This information comes from reporter Andy Robinson, who shared these details during the VGC Off The Record podcast. More details were published within a VGC article.
Konami went through an internal restructure and some “soul-searching,” which led the company to choose to ramp up “premium” game development. According to Robinson, this includes new installments and remakes for some of its most popular series.
Robinson stated the Castlevania game is a “reimagining” of the series and that an internal studio in Japan is developing it alongside external studios in Japan.
A remake for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is also in development. An unnamed studio is working on this game, as noted by Robinson. This title is likely in the very early stages of development. Eurogamer also reported that Konami has “mulled a new version of MGS3 for some time.”
The Metal Gear project is reported to be in the works at Virtuos, the Singapore-based studio that’s worked on several major titles and ports, including Dark Souls and The Outer Worlds for the Nintendo Switch.
Update: I’ve been told the studio behind the MGS project is Virtuous, who recently ported Dark Souls and The Outer Worlds to Switch, and contributed to blockbusters such as Battlefield 1 and Horizon Zero Dawn.— Andy Robinson (@AndyPlaytonic) October 1, 2021
Lastly, multiple Silent Hill games are also in development, one of which has been given to prominent Japanese developer. All of these new games will begin to be announced throughout 2022, as stated by the report.
It’s been quite some time since any of these major franchises have seen any action, and if Konami did in fact say they needed to shift to “premium” games, that’s important to note. The company has been outputting smaller releases, pachinko games, and the PES/eFootball series.
