Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that the next Grand Theft Auto game is in development. What’s more, it’s not in its infancy either, as Rockstar said in a blog post that the new project is “well underway.” Whether or not the game will actually be called GTA 6, is yet to be known.
The studio did not reveal any specifics about the new game, which is rumored to have a Fortnite-style evolving map. The new game is likely being developed by several Rockstar studios, as the company has done for some of its bigger releases, like Red Dead Redemption II.
Of course, Rockstar is ready to give any specifics on the next GTA, the company did say its general philosophy with new games is to “significantly move beyond” what they’ve already achieved.
“With the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered–and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway,” Rockstar said. “We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready…”
It’s really not surprising that Rockstar is making a new GTA, as it’s been reported for quite some time that the studio has been developing it. GTA V and GTA Online have continued to do well throughout its lifecycle (with the base game selling over 155 million copies), bringing plenty to believe that Rockstar had no reason to begin development on another title in the series.
As for when the next GTA might be released, well, we are not privy to that information. However, some analysts believe it could launch as soon as 2023.
