Because of a long development cycle, many wondered whether Final Fantasy XV would make a profit.
Previously Square Enix touted a combined 5 million in digital and physical games shipped. Then later the number grew to 6 million. Of these are shipped numbers and do not equal sold copies. Many speculated that the game was profitable, but there was no confirmation.
Now in an interview with Dualshockers, Final Fantasy XV game director Hajime Tabata spoke about the game’s success.
Final Fantasy XV has already broke even with development cost and in fact did so on the first day of its release. The exact numbers of cost and sales remain unknown. Tabata has in the past stated that the development team’s personal goal was 10 million copies sold although this was not the number needed to be profitable.
Regardless of the exact numbers, it is safe to assume that Final Fantasy XV has made a profit. It will likely continue to do so as the game’s DLC Season Pass was the second most sold add-on content on PSN in January.
